Trigger Lock Vs Cable Lock

A safe or lock box is perhaps the best way to secure your gun. The problem with safe’s is that one of your children have watched you open it and therefore has eventually memorized the combination or keypad.
The greatest responsibility you have as a firearms owner is the safety of your weapon.
There are several types of trigger locks available today. Many come with your weapon when you purchase it.
One of the most common is a cable lock. This is a long cable designed to go through the magazine port of your gun and exit through your ejection port. The cable can be locked by key or combination. To have a cable lock is better than having nothing at all. The problem is that if you have a very inquisitive 15-year-old boy with a pair of lineman wire cutters, cable cutters, or bolt cutters he can remove the lock in seconds.
When you are picking out a Trigger Lock, you need to make sure that the Gun Lock isolates the slide, the trigger and trigger guard.
To safely store you weapon, you want to ensure that there is no bullet in the chamber and that the magazine is removed.
You have to decide if the Gun Lock you are buying can be easily compromised. Remember you get what you pay for.
No matter what security device you choose, make sure that it meets the California Department of Justice Safety standards.
If you have a safe or lock box, lock your trigger lock inside of it.
Its not enough to just lock your gun up, you must explain what the gun is for and the reasons to not touch it.
When it comes to gun safety, I believe we fall behind in explaining the dangers of a gun. Conversation can save lives.

If you are not sure how to explain gun safety to your child, then I suggest you visit projectchildsafe.org
